The Beginning
The hole in the ozone layer was first noticed in the mid 1970's by a research group from BAS (British Antarctic Survey) while monitoring the atmosphere in the Antarctic. It was not until 1985 that the ozone depletion was being accepted as genuine.
What is ozone and how is it formed?

Ozone is a chemical that occurs naturally in the atmosphere, which has several layers. We live in the Troposphere where most of the weather like rain, snow, and hail happen. The next layer is called the Stratosphere which is where the ozone hole and global warming originated. The Mesosphere is 50km off the ground level on earth and no bird would ever dare to fly there. The final layer is called the exosphere which is 200 km above the earth. |
The damage the hole is causing.
The hole in the ozone layer is causing a lot of damage to the animal life in the arctic and the atmosphere around our planet .The animals that are being destroyed include the polar bear, the penguin, the dodo which is now extinct and the species that we don't know live in the arctic are getting endangered and could very well be destroyed by the hole in the ozone.
What is the ozone hole?
The ozone hole is not the cause of global warming as the press sometime confuse it with. On the other hand the ozone hole does contribute to the greenhouse effect. The ozone hole is a different problem from global warming and the greenhouse effect. It is a problem where radiation is destroying the protective ozone. The loss of ozone over the years is still increasing for months to come.

Cfc stands for chlorafloracarbons which are tiny particles that cling to the ozone molecules in the winter and during the spring and summer as part of global warming the cfs's melt and destroy the ozone molecule with it. Radiation is also a problem that is destroying the ozone. |
